Student Debate on the topic “Trafficking in Human Beings – 21st Century Slavery” at the Faculty of Law

Considering recent developments with the Europe's migrant and refugee crisis, that have doubled the risks for increased cases of smuggling of migrants and trafficking in human beings, the EU funded project for “Further Institution and Capacity Building of the Police Service” is organizing a Student Debate on the topic “Trafficking in Human Beings – 21st Century Slavery” that will take place on 27 April 2016, Wednesday at the Faculty of Law in Skopje, starting at 11:00 hrs.  

Opening remarks will be delivered by Prof. Dr. Aleksandra Gruevska-Drakulevski, Professor of Criminology and Penology at the Faculty of Law “Iustinianus Primus”, Mr. Saud Kadic, Deputy Commander of the Police Station at the Ljubljana Airport, Slovenia, Ms. Ivona Zakoska-Todorovska, Migrant Assistance Specialist at IOM, and Mr. Marinko Kocovski, Assistant Director - Department for Border Affairs and Migration at the Public Security Bureau.

The Student Debate will gather together the students from the Faculty of Law, University Ss Cyril and Methodius – Skopje and from the Faculty for Security, University St. Clement Ohridski – Bitola, and has a goal to open a discussion on issues related to the reasons which lead to such criminal activities, the consequences and most common forms of exploitation of victims of human trafficking, including the perspective of serious human rights violation, as well as the legal and institutional mechanisms for tackling this phenomenon.

The Student Debate is organized by the “Further Institution and Capacity Building of the Police Service” project, funded by the European Union, in cooperation with the Faculty of Law “Iustinianus Primus”, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Department for Border Affairs and Migration at the Public Security Bureau.
